Street Chic for the Clubstar Team!

The Vinery Senior Stylist Gemma Noon found herself collaborating with award winning stylist Kai Wan for the latest British Hairdressing Fellowship Clubstar Team collection in London this season.
The photoshoot with Kai Wan led with the brief of Street Glamour “Capturing the essence of chic but edgy street style” with each individual team member developing and creating their own interpretation to fit. Gemma carefully chose her model based on her unique look and established undercut which had already been worked on in-salon.
Gemma’s model accompanied her to London to the GHD Studios where the photoshoot was held and Gemma styled the hair, creating three different looks culminating in the final look which made it into the official collection as seen below:

“It was great to work once again with everyone on the Clubstar Fellowship Team. As this was our first collection it was particularly exciting and inspirational, and both an honour and privilege to work with Kai Wan, someone who I look up to and aspire to emulate one day!”

Neo-Soul at The Vinery...

This week  The Vinery welcomed back one of our favourite client's Sarah to the salon, who enjoyed a visit with Senior Stylist Gemma Noon for a colour refresh followed by Cut & Blowdry.
Whilst in the salon, Sarah mentioned that she is in a neo-soul band that performs all across the region and we found the band's background story really interesting, especially as we have a fair few jazz and funk fans on our staff team!
Obviously the hair industry is extremely creative and draws its influences from fashion, couture, make-up and music, with each season bringing something new to the fore. With the ever increasing popularity of soul, blues and jazz, which itself is steeped in history we thought we would have a listen to Sarah's music and share her story.
Image
The Dana Ali Band (Sarah is the backing singer) is the brainchild of American singer-songwriter Dana Ali and her bass-playing partner Dave Hewitt (of British band Babe Ruth). They describe themselves as a neo-soul group taking influences from iconic greats such as Aretha Franklin and Roberta Flack to develop their distinctive fusion of jazz, funk, soul and latin music.
The Dana Ali Band have some local gigs planned (of which is at one of The Vinery's favourite Leeds bars..Smokestack!) so do make sure you head along to hear them perform!

Vinery Lookbook Photoshoot '14

Our latest Vinery Lookbook photoshoot concept was all about vintage…with a modern twist! We wanted a real 40s feel to the general look of our models but with a contemporary edge to the hair.
For this purpose we selected two female models who both had quite short crops. The idea was to work with the hair to create something that was evocative of the 1940s but that also reflected the 21st century sense of vintage style.
It was vitally important to get the location for the photoshoot right and with a little research and local knowledge we found the perfect spot - the superbly quirky Time Circa 2010 Cafe in Hammonds Yard, off King Street in the centre of Huddersfield. We sourced the fabulous authentic vintage clothing from Revival Vintage in Byram Arcade, Huddersfield and the entire ensemble, from clothing, location, hair and make-up came together to produce a fantastic set of photographs!
Heres a taster of the shoot but to check out the full Vinery January Lookbook see our website…

We extend thanks to Andrew at Time Circa 2010 and also to Revival Vintage as well as to our talented photographer Mick Walker whose vision helped pull all our ideas together!
Thanks also to our lovely models Kirby and Steph who look amazing and were extremely professional throughout the shoot!

Product Reviews – For Our Clients and By Our Clients!

We recently acquired some new products in Salon from the Alterna Bamboo Gents range and thought it would be a great idea to get some of our male clients to review them on our behalf!
We insisted that the reviews were done as honestly as possible – If they loved them then fantastic but if the products weren’t that great then obviously we want to hear why!
We are excited to have the first review from Purav Desai who was asked to give the Alterna Bamboo Power Hold Gel and here is what he had to say about it..
“I have had chance to use the Alterna Power Hold Gel. But unfortunately I didn’t feel that this was a great product for me. I didn’t find that it provided a ‘power hold’ and felt that my hair was drying up. The product would not last for a full day and needed re-applying to maintain my style.”
We would like to extend a big thank you to Purav for a very objective and thorough review!

Over the next week or two we will hear back from Charles who tried out the Alterna Bamboo Thickening Lotion so watch this space!

A Man's Perspective..

This week we are talking Male Grooming..its the decade of the Metrosexual and boy is it becoming more and more important!
I have noticed over the past few months that men are placing huge importance on their grooming and it has come more and more into fashion, with gents generally taking better care of their appearance and placing huge importance on their personal look, style and products. As a Stylist I cannot help but notice how my clientele has consistently risen with males coming in who are placing a huge significance on their grooming maintenance and routine.
Younger men are booking in for their eyebrows, beards and even their ears trimming. In fact my male clientele have even started to bring in pictures and photographs with them to appointments to demonstrate the look their are either hoping to achieve to trying to maintain. More males are growing beards and it's no longer about sporting the ZZ-Top mammoth hair overgrowth,Image now beards are more tailored and fashionable and with celebrities like Calum Best, David Beckham and Johnny Depp leading the way with their carefully sculpted facial fuzz its no surprise that these trends have filtered down to the high street.
Image

There are certain products now available for Beard aftercare such as creams, oils and moisturisers as well as specialist grooming tools including combs and bristle brushes aimed at keeping those rogue facial hairs in check. General haircare product sales have also seen a massive climb with gents buying more products to help them stay looking fresh and fashion-conscious. Image
Personally I try to take care of my hair as much as possible, but found that I was looking a tad thin on top over the past 18 months, something that every 20-something man dreads! So I went on to try Nioxin, a three-step hair loss prevention product system which I found helped immensely. Image Diet is also a big factor in the health of your hair, so like everyone else this New Year I have tried to cut down on a lot of things such as alcohol and junk food. Again I have seen a big difference in only 4 weeks, with my hair looking and feeling thicker and less fuzzy - and its not just me that has noticed - everyone is commenting on how healthy I look and how my hair looks great which is exactly the result i was hoping for! And i am not the only one who takes my looks seriously, its no longer about being seen as vain, its about building confidence and looking good. My friends take pride in their appearance too which just spurs others such as myself to do the same. Not only do I look after my hair but I try to look after my skin which is just important. I have started using Kiehls products on my face and can see the difference already so I would undoubtedly recommend these products to everyone!
For more information about male grooming products or to ask my advice on how to maintain the perfect hairstyle/beard just get in touch with me at The Vinery!

The Vinery’s ‘Must-Have’ Hair Predictions for 2014…

The Vinery team have been eagerly awaiting the start of 2014 with new hair colours and trends firing our creativity! Learning of the Pantone “radiant orchard” (purple with pink and fuchsia hues) becoming the colour of the year means we will see a return to the vibrancy of last years intense balayage effects. Over the top of your blonde ends, or if you’re feeling even more daring, a full head colour.
Image
The advent of last seasons intense pink tones over blonde will mean that this season is going to be all the more brighter and in your face. Personally I think it’s a refreshing change to the subtlety of recent years, and it could make for some interesting colour effects.

This seasons styles will see a shortening of the bob. After seeing the short choppy wigs on the catwalks of A/W, this will see the bob become more pixified or urchin like with messy textures a plenty.
The turn of the pageboy now, this was seen on the catwalks again using wigs, with such crops used on Fendi and L’Wren Scott. This again brings a more youthful look to hairstyles following the Indy shapes of last season.

For those of you that see a short bob (or any bob, for that matter!) a slow and painful demise, then why not put your lengthy locks through the paces of some of the seasons great ‘up do’s'?
Image
The wind-swept thrown up look is fantastic for the morning after, just keep the finish matte and make sure it’s clean. Or opt for the old-world braid straight out of the renaissance, with soft tendrils dropping onto the features.

Whatever you do with your hair this season, make sure it’s not too “done”!

David Bowie – Style Icon turns 67..

David Bowie – Singer, Songwriter, Actor, Producer and the chameleon of image changes turns 67 today (7 January) and it seems he won’t be claiming his bus pass just yet with the release of his latest album this year, The Next Day
Here at The Vinery we see David Bowie as something of a style icon, with a plethora of images and personas that have seen him storm through the decades at the forefront of both hair and fashion.
This Brixton boy was born in 1947 when Britain was on the road to recovery from the devastating impact of WW2. Bowie developed a unique sound, beginning with the folk scene that was popular in the 60′s, complete with long flowing hair and obligatory guitar…
images-10Bowie then pushed through the musical frontier, pioneering the Glam Rock sound and vision taking this to the hilt with the creation of his persona Ziggy Stardust – which soared DB to cult status:

Bowie’s musical and fashion direction took a new turn with his album Diamond Dogs and the song Rebel Rebel which saw him develop a more soulful and funky sound. In another twist Bowie developed another persona, the Thin White Duke.

We had the catchy Lets Dance in the 1980s and the classic (I think so anyway!) film Labyrinth – who can forget Bowie on that freaky upside down staircase?! Not forgetting his immense Mullet and those tight leather pants…
Unknown-5
In the 1990′s Bowie married Somali-born supermodel Iman..and in the 2000′s entered the hall of fame with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2006.
With 9 UK Platinum albums, 11 UK Gold albums and 8 UK Silver albums tucked under his umbrella it seems that slowing down isn’t an option for this sexagenarian who is releasing yet another album this year. We are eagerly awaiting his next fashion transformation for this decade…lets hope its as iconic as his previous forays!
